Building a Legend focuses on the quest for the lost sound of a legendary piano: the Steinweg 1836 or the Steinway n° 1, built by Heinrich Engelhardt Steinweg, in Seesen, Germany.
Chris Maene, a Flemish renowned pianoforte builder; the toppianist Abdel Rahman El Bacha, and the 91 years old great grandson Heinrich Steinway, all have their own particular interest in hearing the original sound of this first Steinway Grand again.
When Chris Maene sets off to building a replica, this means the start of their common dream coming true.

Unique encounters, historical particularities, scientific investigation, craftsmanship, and of course music: it is all part of the quest for the lost sound of an exceptional instrument.

Building a Legend with, amongst others Chris Maene, Abdel Rhman El Bacha, Henry Z. Steinway, Malcolm Bilson, Claire Chevalier and music of Chopin, is a documentary that brings the personal story of passionate people. Therefore, it appeals not only to professionals and music specialists, but to a large public.
